About Dr. Elizabeth Lai

Dr. Elizabeth Lai grew up in Barrie, Ontario where she lived and worked at her parents' fruit market and garden center. Over the years, a lot of the customers saw her grow up there and got to know her family well. It was the hard work that Elizabeth put into her parents' store that enabled her to study hard to get into the competitive Optometry program at the University of Waterloo. It also gave her the ambition to open her own optometry office one day. Elizabeth also learned that she liked helping people and interacting with them. And this is why she loves being an Optometrist. She really enjoys getting to know her patients and makes it her mission to solve all of their vision problems.

Elizabeth attended the University of Waterloo and completed her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Optometry Degrees in 2003. She also completed externship programs in Calgary, Alberta and in Ottawa, Ontario. She was trained to manage and treat eye diseases with therapeutic pharmaceutical agents.

Elizabeth met her husband, Frederick Lai who also graduated from the University of Waterloo. Frederick had completed his Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering and worked for Research In Motion, the makers of Blackberry phones. They met, they dated, and then got married. Shortly after, Frederick decided he wanted to change careers and he was intrigued with the idea of starting his own business. Elizabeth suggested that he consider the eye care field. She thought he had the technical skills to be a great optiican and he would be able to explain to patients how the different choices in frames and lenses can affect how you see.

So, Elizabeth and Frederick packed up their lives in Waterloo and moved across the country to Vancouver where Frederick completed the BC College of Optics Program. After becoming a licensed optician, his technical skills and attention to detail have really enhanced the service he offers at his optical store, All About Eyewear Optical. He takes precise measurements and takes the time to adjust your glasses properly. And he's got a great sense of style!

How did Elizabeth and Frederick end up moving to Bedford, Nova Scotia? Elizabeth and Frederick thought long and hard about what was important to them. They wanted to start a family in a safe community where the people are friendly and laid-back and they also wanted the surroundings to be beautiful. These are hard things to find in Ontario, but easily found on the east coast. Elizabeth and Frederick had visited Halifax a few years ago and it seemed to be the only place that had all the things they were looking for, and was even close to the city. So, in June 2007, Elizabeth and Frederick moved to Nova Scotia and decided that Bedford would be a great place to have their first child.

They moved just in time for their son, Lucas to be born at the IWK in 2007. When he was a toddler, he was often seen playing at the office. His parents really enjoyed having Lucas at work with them so they could spend more time with him and watch him grow up. Already there are many fond memories of Lucas taking his first steps in the Optical and pointing at the posters on the walls and exclaiming "eye". Maybe one day he'll want to be an optometrist too!

Fast forward to 2012, and the Lai family has expanded to a family of 4, with Xavier being the newest addition to the family. The two boys are sure keeping their parents busy these days and are very active children. Lucas likes books and superheroes and Xavier likes cars and noisy toys. They are a real joy in their parents lives and make each day an interesting one! Watch for their guest appearances at the office!
